Enabling Media, Community and Civil Society for Better Tomorrow

The Nobel Peace Prize won by the celebrated economist Muhammad Yunus in 2006 has been a great source of pride for Bangladesh. It has gone some way in countering the negative perception of the country in international media. The award will be officially unveiled to the nation in a ceremony on the 17th July 2008. The event will be launched by Mr. Fakhruddin Ahmed, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh (the head of government). It will also be attended by Professor Ole Danbolt Mjøs, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Ms. Støfring Ingebjørg, the Ambassador of Norway in Bangladesh and many other dignitaries.

The Nobel Peace Prize has propelled Muhammad Yunus, the proponent of micro-credit, to super star status. While there have been previous receptions for him in Bangladesh, this launch, with the medal physically in view, and with thousands of students and many ordinary Bangladeshis coming to view the medal and the elegant exhibit on permanent display, is special. The nation has a new jewel in its crown.

This exhibition was initially showcased at the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo, Norway and has now been brought to Bangladesh through a combined effort of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Grameen Bank and Drik Picture Library Ltd.

Drik Picture Library Ltd. (www.drik.net), is an award winning photo agency which has spearheaded the meteoric rise of Bangladeshi photography, making Dhaka one of the emerging capitals of photography in the world and far outstripping its economically superior neighbours China, India and Singapore. Drik has launched www.majorityworld.com the global portal which represents the work of non-western photographers. It organises Chobi Mela, the best known photo festival outside of the west. It also runs Pathshala, The South Asian Institute of Photography which has consistently been producing some of the brightest young photographers and has been taking the photography world by storm. Known for its social activism, Drik is also a new media pioneer and introduced email to Bangladesh in the early nineties.
